Gnaoua Again! is the latest work by Moroccan playwright Ghassan El Hakim. For this performance, Ghassan delved into his memories of his childhood in Casablanca. As artist-in-resident of Afrovibes, he explores the taboo on Sufi music that prevailed within his family. Together with one of Morocco’s greatest Gnawa masters – Maalem Abdellah El Gourd – and musicians Soufiane El Ghazouani, Amine Naouni and Farid Ghannam, he takes a journey into the past. Gnaoua Again! is musical theatre in which personal stories come together with Gnawa’s musical tradition that has its origins in Morocco’s slavery past.
