AFROVIBES TALK: BELONGING, EXUBERANCE AND DECOLONIZING THE ARTS

Language: English spoken

Amsterdam | De Balie
Fr 11 October, 19h00

‘Belonging’ explores the dynamics of identity and community in a global context. Our talkshow guests will share their personal experiences and speak how art and culture can contribute to a sense of belonging. You will join an in-depth discussion on how we define and experience ‘belonging’ in different contexts. The concept of ‘post-colonising artists’ will receive special attention in this conversation. How do colonial structures and history, power relations and cultural dynamics still influence contemporary societies and our personal identities.

In the arts, in recent years, the international art community has shifted its focus from the ‘West’ to the Global South. The 60th Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious art exhibitions worldwide, was titled “Foreigners Everywhere” and highlighted indigenous art and non-Western artists from regions such as Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. However, what is truly needed to create a postcolonial museum and postcolonial art? How do colonial and power structures continue to influence artists and art institutions?

Join us as we explore the complexities of representation and belonging in the art world and its relation with identity, culture and community.
